2006 Tech Support Salary Survey
Publication date: 2/06

Executive summary

For the past eleven years, the Association of Support Professionals has conducted an annual survey of tech support salaries among software companies that is widely noted for its accuracy and consistency. The 2006 survey, which reflects data from 171 support organizations with more than 12,000 support employees, shows across-the-board increases in support compensation for calendar year 2005 ranging from 5% for basic support technicians to 12.5% for senior executives.

These gains, the report notes, represent an important turnaround in support compensation after several years of a de facto pay freeze that affected most of the software industry. "There was a real danger that support was beginning to look like a dead-end career," says ASP executive director Jeffrey Tarter. "The fact that salaries are rising again should help companies recruit and retain high-quality people, especially in the managerial, professional and senior-level jobs that require the most experience and judgment.

The report also noted that retaining talented support employees has become increasingly essential as companies rely more heavily on maintenance and post-sales relationship for a large part of their revenues.

Here's how support employees fared in the 2005 survey's seven major job categories
(salaries are medians):

Year-to-Year Comparison:
